Emmanuel: with Cate Vose

Throughout Advent, we have been reflecting on the different titles of Jesus. One of my favourites is Emmanuel – which literally means, “God with us”. It can be easy to believe that God is somewhat distant and detached from our everyday world; our sorrows, heartaches and joys. But each Christmas, we are reminded of this astonishing truth; that God came to the world in human form, to remind us that he is with us, not in an existential sense; but in a lived- shared reality sense. That beautiful carol, oh come oh come Emmanuel, with its haunting refrain, reminds us that we like generations before us long to know this Christ who would break all the rules to draw near to us. Our deepest selves hunger and long for meaning and for connection; and Emmanuel reminds us that God listens to us, and has answered us with presence. May you encounter Emmanuel in fresh ways this Christmas.
